Iwa-enogu is a traditional Japanese pigment made by crushing natural minerals. It arrived in Japan more than 1,400 years ago, and its colors have lasted for centuries on temple walls and paintings without fading. Gunroku is a deep, cool green ground from malachite.

At a workshop in Kanazawa, the pigment is brushed onto the dial again and again, layer over layer. Because the grains are coarse, they catch the light and sparkle in a way ordinary paint cannot. The tiny hour markers are gold leaf laid over washi paper, each less than a millimeter across and placed by hand with the tip of a fine brush.

Every watch is made to order, one at a time.
